Joined the cast of the soap opera Eastenders at the age of nine as Clare, a role she played for five years.
Was cast in Sense & Sensibility after the director saw her perform in Les Mis and remembered her when she auditioned.
After she left Eastenders she attempted "real school" for several months before she was cast as rebellious Sarah-Louise Platt on the soap opera Coronation Street in 1999. She left the series in 2002.
In 2002 she appeared as Nicky in The Bourne Identity, her first film role in seven years. She reprised the role in two further Bourne films.
In 2004, she and her boyfriend welcomed a daughter, Zoe.
In 2005 Julie was cast as Rose in the revived sci-fi series Doctor Who. She left the cast in 2006, but reprised the role in three episodes of series four in 2008 and one final time in 2010.
